Ewww…. Bed Bugs!

By sarah on August 1st, 2008

Bed bugs are nasty little creatures that can cause big problems for your family. They can live for months without food, so killing bed bugs is not an easy task. This article will help you determine whether you have bed bugs and teach you effective methods to eliminate the problem.

First things first, how do you know if you have a bed bug problem?  Well, bed bugs are tiny, so it’s hard to spot them. Plus, they live inside furniture and only come out briefly during the night when most people are asleep. Since you can’t realistically find the bed bugs, you should just look for signs that they have infested your home. Bed bug bites are the most obvious sign. If you or your children wake up with small, itchy bites on your skin, then you probably have bed bugs.

You can confirm your suspicions by looking for their blood, feces, and dead bodies. It’s even possible to catch them if you keep a flashlight by your bed and inspect the environment just before dawn. The most conclusive way to know whether you have bed bugs, though, is to place double-sided tape in the infested area. If you have bed bugs, then you will find them stuck to the tape within a few days.

Killing Bed Bugs with Foggers

Foggers contain a pesticide called permethrin that will kill bed bugs on contact. The problem with killing bed bugs with foggers, though, is that you might not get all of them. Many researchers suspect that some of the bed bugs will escape the pesticide by fleeing into the walls. They stay there until the coast is clear, and then they can move right back into your furniture. This delays the problem, but does not solve it.

Killing Bed Bugs with an Exterminator

The most effective way to kill bed bugs is to hire a professional exterminator. They should have equipment and chemicals specifically designed for killing bed bugs. Before the exterminator comes to your home, though, you should make sure that the area is clean. This will make it easier for the professional to investigate the area and determine what products will work best in your home.

Killing Bed Bugs with DIY Techniques

If an exterminator does not fit into your budget right now, then you might want to try some DIY techniques. Steam cleaning is an effective way to kill bed bugs because it creates extreme heat. Note that you will have to use it on everything that could be infested. This means your chairs, couches, and carpets as well as bedding.

Some people simply leave infested items out in the cold to kill off the bugs. This works on occasion, but don’t expect consistent results. Plus, the inside of your mattress won’t get as cold as the exterior. Bed bugs can actually live inside the mattress for a couple of weeks even when the temperature drops below zero. That’s a long time to go without your mattress.

Some people have even found success with extreme heat, but don’t expect to kill any bed bugs unless the temperature outdoors reaches at least 120 degrees. Again, it could take a few weeks to kill them all.

this is the second time i have been infested with bed bugs that came into my apt clinging to my clothes from another persons home. i am disabled and have not been able to get rid of them effectively and i am freaking about it with my anxiety disorder. i used foggers the last time and its been monthes but now they are back, i have called local bug people but they say a thousand per unit and there are 4 apts in this building, and i am afraid the management will charge me for this and i only live on social security , i dont have a clue what to do anymore im at my wits end,, please help me

  • Bill

I have an infestation too and I am shopping for a mattress cover and stumbled across this site. To June, if you cannot afford the exterminator which your landlord is responsible for providing you with a clean and healthy environment. Check with you local housing authority to see what you state regulations say about pest control. It is usually the landlords responsibility.

But, I found that sprinkling Diatomaceous Earth around your bed and into the mattress will keep them out of your bed. They may travel elsewhere and hide but if they come in contact with this powder they will die from dehydration and it is human and pet safe product. Only $40 for 2 huge containers on Amazon.

    Good Luck

When I found the bed bugs in my mattress I immediately threw it out. I live in an apt. and later that night I found that my mattress was gone…someone here had taken it to their place…i don’t know who…I knew of at least 3 families that were battling these nasty things before this had happened. I bought a brand new mattress still in the plastic…2 days later I found that it was infested…after calling the co. and getting a refund, we brought it to the trash…this time we put a sign saying “bed bugs do not take” {by now there were mattresses in almost every dumpster} the next day our manager called us to his office and chewed us out for putting a sign on it…When I told him about the first mattress (not putting a sign on it}he said o well if someone wants to pull it from the garbage then that’s their problem. He said he is getting several calls from tenants saying they are moving out if there are bed bugs here & they want to know who has them. I told him other people put signs on their matresses and he said yes but they just put “bugs” …now my mgr. is threatening to kick us out and wants us to write a letter stating that the bugs came from the mattress we bought and that we did not get them here on property! If we don’t we have to leave…My apt is well kept/clean…I was at one of the apt that was infested {I didn’t know it at the time} and they had been over to my place at least once…we started getting bit shortly after. They didn’t tell me they had a problem till I was leaving… and they had brought me to their bdrm to show me a lamp they had just bought. Which means I was in just about every room in there apt. I have a small dog so at first I thought I had fleas…Until I found a bed bug crawling on my bathroom wall.

To date We have spent over $200.00 trying to rid our place of bed bugs and or fleas…I have bought $30 cans of some powder stuff for the carpets and furniture. It did nothing…I bought sprays…bombs…foggers…and professionally shampooed my carpets after bombing…hoping that would take care of any eggs that might still be alive…I washed everything I could In Hot soapy water and what I didn’t wash I have tied up in plastic garbage bags…I was good for a couple of days but now there back again…The only thing left to do (I think)is an exterminator.

Does anyone Know…First of all…are these bugs a danger to my 2 yr old dog???

Am I responsible for paying for an exterminator???

Can I be kicked out for putting the bed bug sign on the mattress???

Should I write this letter that they are insisting on???

PLEASE…Any information {fact base if possible) is greatly appreciated…THANX

OMG!! they are eatten us alive please tell me how we can get rid of them and keep them gone never…never had them before they just appeared overnite!!

  • Ryan

@Michelle: Your husband is most likely being bit, but is not allergic to their bites so it doesn’t show any symptoms. Some people can get bit by fleas, be exposed to poison ivy, etc., and have no reaction to it.

  • mdhkauai

The bedbug is a mite. Their presence is NOT indicative of a person or family’s cleanliness. People who finger point and allude that they have picked up this mite through contact with someone else’s unclean environment are fanning the flames of hysteria. Bed bugs are opportunistic and resilient. They live in EVERY environment where a potential host is viable. Mites are common everyday organisms and EVERY human being plays host to hundreds of thousands of them. What sets the bedbug apart is the reaction in the skin of people allergic to the anesthetic ejected into the skin from the bedbugs bite. The bedbug injects this anesthetic so you will not feel it’s bite and kill it, much like a mosquito does.
