First Birthday

By Kidglue Team on October 2nd, 2008

There is no birthday that is more fun to celebrate than your child’s first birthday. That is perhaps the most significant milestone that they will pass in their life. After all, think about how many changes occur just in the first year of your child’s life. They have gone from being simply a baby who relies upon your for every need and is not able to interact very easily, to a smiling and alert youngster who will charm everyone at their party with their ability to crawl, perhaps walk, and the very few teeth they have started to get. The first year of life is the realm of so many more changes than any other year of life. Making that first birthday celebration becomes that much more important because of the specialness of that first year!

Unfortunately, as excited as you are by your child’s first birthday, it is unlikely that they will understand the milestone they are approaching or remember the joyous event after the fact. First birthday celebrations are more for parents and family members to enjoy, but your child’s needs and desires and personality should also be taken into consideration when you are planning any celebrations.

One of the most momentous parts of a child’s first birthday is the cake. The tradition exists in many families to let the birthday boy or girl enjoy their first piece of cake all on their own. And enjoy it, they will! You may want to prep ahead of time by taking off any nice clothes or by dressing them in an outfit that is easy to wash off later on. When they get the opportunity to dig into their first piece of birthday cake ever, it is likely that although a little will actually make it into their mouth, a majority of it will actually be smeared on every imaginable surface and most especially all over their body. Although this can seem like a mess, it can be a very enjoyable spectacle for many families to enjoy watching.

Another fun part of a first birthday celebration is giving your child their first opportunity to open presents all by themselves. The act of opening a wrapped gift can be just as much fun as seeing what is inside the gift itself. In fact, some children will be far more fascinated by wrapping paper and gift bags than by the thoughtfully selected gift that is contained inside. It is important to let your child enjoy their moment as the center of attention instead of taking away the fun wrappings right away.

First birthday celebrations can be enjoyable to all who are involved in their planning and execution. Don’t forget to focus entirely on your child and everyone who attends will have a fabulous time!
