You’ve urged your child to work hard in school and get the best grades he or she possibly could, and your child has come to a milestone in a school career—a graduation. Some graduations, like kindergarten or 8th grade graduations, mark those moments when a child is transitioning from one type of classroom instruction to another. These should be celebrated to encourage the child, and mark the passage of time, as well to celebrate the child’s hard work in school. But other graduations like college graduations and the all-important high-school graduation require special attention.

Graduating high school is often one of the biggest achievements of a young person’s life. They’re ready for college, the military, or the work force, depending on their goals and dreams, and transitioning from the teen years to adulthood. It can be a stressful time for kids, but it’s also one of the most exciting times of their lives. Celebrating this milestone and one of the biggest markers of the move from childhood to being a “grown up” is important.

Graduation parties are popular gatherings to celebrate a child’s achievement and show your pride. Like a birthday party, the gathering is all about the child and his or her achievement, and can make great memories for them and you. Whether the party is for a major graduation, marking notable achievements, or a kindergarten or 8th grade graduation that’s simply a rite of passage for many, you can enjoy having friends and family gather to mark your child’s big day.

There’s no lack of items to help you organize a graduation party. Balloons and decorations with a graduation theme are easily found in specialty and discount stores when the school year nears an end. While you can make a graduation party as elaborate as you want, it can be done simply and inexpensively. You can order a special cake for your graduate, or simply have snacks available for those who come and go. If you have a house filled with family and friends, the focus will be on conversation and laughter rather than food and decorations, anyway.

Graduation gifts are common, with smaller items generally given for grade-school graduations. A high school graduation is a good time for a gift that can help the child transition into college—maybe a dorm-sized fridge or down-payment money for a car. Though the gift doesn’t have to be expensive—a smaller gift that has more sentimental value works well for a graduation, as does something passed down through generations that can now be presented to the “new” adult. A planned fun day like a trip to an amusement park or zoo can also be a great graduation present.

The most important thing to remember about graduations is that the focus should be your child’s achievement, not the size of the party or the price of the gift.
