Bed Bugs & Scabies

By Kidglue Team on October 7th, 2008

While everyone is familiar with parasites such as lice and leeches, scabies are sometimes overlooked in the paragon of nasty critters. Scabies, in many ways, is worse than lice or other types of parasitic infestations do to the fact that they cannot be seen with the naked eye and that the only indication of their presence is the rash in the form of bite marks that they leave behind. These types of rash outbreaks can be very embarrassing for young children in school when they are subjected to the humiliation of their classmates. Because of this, and the fact that they cannot be seen with the naked eye, scabies are far more unpleasant to contract than lice or other types of infestations.

While lice can be treated with simple shampoos scabies are somewhat more difficult to treat and eliminate, and the evidence of their existence remains for several days after they have been killed off. Due to the fact that they cannot be seen with the naked eye, the scabies treatments are required to take a few days, keeping children out of school long enough for the rash and swelling to heal. Considering that in the case of lice, you can see the insects with the naked eye, it is a far easier treatment process and it is simple to decide when they can return to school. In most cases, the school nurse goes over the child and completes the head check with the child in order to clear them of lice. Unfortunately, with scabies, they must simply wait until the rash or outbreak is subsiding and then they can be remitted to school.

Due to the fact that scabies are so difficult to see and so hard to detect, it can be quite some time before they are guaranteed to be completely eliminated from the child’s body. Because of this, it takes significantly longer to ensure that they can return to school, causing many more days of missed classes than the infestation of lice. Naturally, compounding this difficulty is the fact that scabies can live all over the body and do not require hair to latch onto. While lice and ticks generally tend to hide in hairy parts of the body, scabies are attracted to anything that they can get their hands on and they cause a nasty, burning outbreak or rash that is not only painful but also embarrassing for children who are subjected to the taunts of their classmates when they have these types of outbreaks.

In addition to all the difficulties, scabies carries the same difficulties and issues that lice care, mainly that children give these types of infestations to each other. Scabies can jump from host to host just as lice do and cause all manner of difficulties and problems in the long run. Entire classes can be wiped out and kept out of school for weeks on end due to the trading off of these types of infestations. Many individuals consider this one of the priority reasons that these types of infestations should be so vigorously resisted on the part of the parents as well as the school. By completely eliminating scabies as well as lice and other types of infestations from schools, many absenteeisms could be eliminated and grades in general for many students could recover and maintain a high level without the difficulty of dealing with a recurring infestation of scabies or lice or other types of parasites.
