While the advertisers will lead you to believe that every year there is some kind of absolute “must-have,” your-child-can’t-live-without-it toy, it’s a pretty silly claim. Without a doubt every child has unique tastes for their toys, and a toy that one child may love to death another won’t even give the time of day. Too often, people rely on the media to tell them what toys their kids want, instead of going straight to the source – the child themselves.
The most important thing to keep in mind when buying toys for your child is surprisingly simple, but often overlooked. You have to keep your child’s interests in mind. Don’t take the marketers word for it – ask your child what kind of toys they want to play with. While you may want to buy your child an educational toy, the child may have no interest in it. You can’t really force a kid to play with something he or she doesn’t want to – and if you do the effect will probably be lost anyway. Your best bet is to find out what your child wants, and try to find a toy of that type with educational applications.
That said, one warning: sometimes kids can be even more susceptible to marketing than parents. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility for your child to be “brainwashed” into wanting a toy that he or she has no legitimate interest in. It can be difficult to be sure what the situation is, but again the best thing to do may be to simply ask. Find out exactly why your child wants a certain toy, and you should be able to determine if its genuine excitement or pure hype.
For younger children, it’s usually a good idea to try and find a balance between fun and education. There are a lot of unique toys out there that can really help a child express creativity, use imagination, and learn practical skills. A little research can go a long way. Look up other parents’ reviews of the toy in question and see how their children liked it. This can help you make informed decisions that you won’t regret.
Buying a good toy for your child is almost like buying the right piece of jewelry or similar gift for your significant other. It shows the child that you are really thinking about them and their interests specifically. On top of that, making smart purchases of toys is a lot easier on your wallet. If you constantly have to cycle toys in and out of your house, it’s going to get old really quick. Strive to find toys that your child will play with for months, if not years. They’ll appreciate it, and so will your budget.
