Babies need so many different things when you first bring them into your life and into your home. Because babies spend more hours every day sleeping than engaged in any other activity, buying the right baby bedding is such an important consideration. Baby bedding should not be purchased simply because you find cute objects that accessorize well with their nursery. Baby bedding can also have health implications and should be chosen to positively impact the time your child spends in their crib sleeping.
One of the most important considerations for baby bedding is having a firm mattress available to sleep upon. While you as an adult may prefer a cushier mattress, your baby will need a more firm surface on which to sleep, as this will help to promote their growth in a healthy manner. If you will be using an older or used mattress, it will need to be carefully examined to make sure that it is still structurally strong enough to support your child.
Another important consideration for baby bedding is the fitted sheets you will use on your baby’s mattress. Unlike adult sheets, babies only will use fitted sheets. These sheets must fit extremely snugly to the mattress itself. If the sheets are loose, they can become a great hazard to your child, in becoming tangled or even in choking. Although you may be tempted to place another sheet over your child as they are sleeping, resist that temptation and instead dress them more warmly for bedtime. Any loose objects in their crib can become hazards to their health.
You may want to invest in a variety of baby blankets for your new child, but you will need to remember that these blankets should be used only when you are up and holding your baby and not to cover them in their crib. It’s a great idea to have multiple blankets to switch between, as a baby will soil multiple blankets each day potentially, but when they go to bed at night, they should never be placed under a blanket unless you have tightly swaddled them with it, or unless they are already a toddler who is less likely to be impacted by any choking or tangling that could be caused.
By following these easy tips for baby bedding, your child will have a safer and more enjoyable experience each time they go to sleep. You can also enjoy the peace of mind, knowing that you have made great decisions for your child.
