For many years, there has been a raging debate of the merits of cloth diapers versus disposable diapers. While generations without end used cloth diapers until just a few decades ago, disposable diapers have now become an extremely popular alternative. When you are making the decision between cloth diapers and disposable diapers for your own child, you will need to consider several different factors to determine what the best option may be for your own life.
First, consider the cost of using cloth diapers versus disposable diapers. One of the loudest arguments for using cloth diapers is the fact that you will only need to buy a set amount of diapers that will last throughout many months of your child’s life. On the other side, disposable diapers will need to be purchased more frequently, and because babies may need between 10-12 diapers per day when they are first born, this can add up quickly. If you choose cloth diapers, you will also need to consider additional costs such as diaper covers, and the electricity and water needed to run additional cycles on your washing machine. Do a careful cost comparison including these factors to see how the prices of diapers may impact your own decision.
Second, consider the health implications of using cloth versus disposable diapers. Cloth diapers have been found to be healthier to use, simply because babies who wear cloth diapers are changed more often and thus their skin spends less time in contact with their waste. Disposable diapers are engineered to partially hid away types of waste to allow for longer periods of time between changes. This can lead to a higher incidence of diaper rash and other infections. However, if you use disposable diapers and change your child frequently, these issues can be avoided.
Third, consider the hassle factor of the diapers that you use. Cloth diapers require more work than disposable diapers. You will do at least 2 or 3 extra loads of laundry per week when you use cloth diapers. In addition, whenever you change your child, you may need to change both the diaper and the diaper cover. In contrast, disposable diapers are thrown away after use and are all in one solutions. So when you are an extremely busy person, you may find that disposables are more convenient for your use.
There are no right and wrong decisions when it comes to cloth versus disposable diapers. Some families use both, in fact, depending on the situation. You may choose to use cloth diapers when at home and disposable diapers when traveling. Or you may use cloth diapers at night and disposables when your child is at day care. You may also choose to use one type when your child is younger and switch when they are older. Simply examine the factors that play into your own life and you will be able to make the best decision on the diapers you use for your baby.
