Raising a child is an expensive task, and having to constantly buy toys as your child outgrows them can be frustrating and wallet draining. Why not make buying toys an investment as well as a form of entertainment? A number of different toys fall into the collectible category. Collectible toys are often parts of sets or one-of-a-kind items that, if taken good care of, may be worth something later in a child’s life. Generally, the returns won’t be huge, but they can be significant. Instead of throwing away your child’s toys when he or she outgrows them, you should think about saving some of them.
Some of the most commonly seen types of collectible toys include action figures and dolls. While it’s difficult to say what specific action figures and toys are worth collecting, this is an ever-changing market where certain toys quickly go out of style and are no longer made. You can be sure that for almost any type of character you might see as an action figure or doll, someone out there collects it.
There are some characters that have a long history of popularity that doesn’t look to be waning any time soon. Batman is one perfect example of this – he has been popular since he was first created, and still has a huge fan base today. It wouldn’t be surprising if many people were collecting Batman toys in the future. Other classic movie, television and comic book characters share a similar popularity.
Toys that come as part of fast food “kid’s meals” are another popular type of collectible toys. McDonald’s is the most common example, with their Happy Meal toys, but many other restaurants offer similar toys. These toys are often parts of sets, and collecting an entire set appeals to many people. While these toys are generally pretty cheaply made, you may be surprised how much they can be worth years and years down the road.
Another common type of collectible toy is from advertising campaigns. For instance, during the holidays, Hess offers their Hess truck toys. These toys, for instance, can often go for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. There are many other different type of advertising icons from years past that can be worth quite a lot. These are often offered as limited editions, so be sure to keep your eyes open for these collectible toys.
Another option is to bequeath your own personal collection of collectible toys to your children or grandchildren. While younger children may not understand or get much enjoyment out of antique toys, it’s a great way to share a piece of your own history with your kids when they are older. In some cases, it can also be a hefty financial gift toward a child’s future.
