When you become a parent for the first time, it can seem like your house is rapidly filling up with baby stuff. Unless you have already spent a significant amount of time around babies, it can seem quite overwhelming to have so many new items enter into your home. It seems like something has been invented to satisfy any possible need in baby care, and, of course, you will want to invest in everything that’s available. Before you cart home an entire store’s worth of merchandise, however, make sure you have the essentials of baby stuff covered.
First and foremost, your baby needs a place to sleep. Babies sleep more hours of the day than they engage in any other activity. Many parents choose to provide multiple sleeping stations for their babies. They may look into a small cradle to use when the baby is first born, have a play pen for the baby to play and nap in as they are bigger, and of course have a dedicated crib for the baby to sleep in until they become a toddler. No matter what choices you make in how and where your baby will sleep, this should be at the top of your baby stuff list to address and buy.
Next, you will need to make sure that you have all of the baby stuff necessary to feed your new child. A newborn baby may eat as much as 10 times in a single day! Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle feed, it is important understand what type of baby stuff you will need to best provide for your child’s nutritional needs. When breastfeeding, you may still need to invest in a handful of bottles so that others can feed your child when you are not around. With bottle feeding, you will need to ensure to have plenty of formula and plenty of bottles so that your child is never left hungry.
Another important area of baby stuff to consider is cleanliness. Diapers are paramount. Whether you choose to use disposable or cloth diapers, always ensure that you keep a large enough supply so that you are never caught empty handed. In addition, you will need to invest in a large supply of wipes – whether disposable or cloth – to be able to clean your child adequately whenever their diaper is changed. For general cleaning times, it is important to keep gentle cleansers in your supply of baby stuff, as their skin will be more delicate than your own and so will need to be washed with appropriate types of cleansers.
Finally, your stash of baby stuff will need to include objects that can aid in your child’s development. From rattles they can hold and chew to mobiles they can watch spin, it is important to engage a child’s attention early and appropriately. Instead of investing only in comfort toys or in baby stuff that’s solely meant to distract, stock your house with objects that will lead to positive cognitive development by constantly challenging your baby’s mind to work.
