Kid’s Playrooms

By Kidglue Team on October 8th, 2008

A child’s playroom should be a where they can explore their creativity without limitation. Making a room in your house into a playroom allows for them to discover their imagination while still being in a safe and comfortable environment. Kids playrooms need certain furnishings and play things to be an ideal learning environment.

These things include:

  • chairs
  • shelves
  • toy boxes
  • painting easels
  • indoor sand tables
  • play tables

A child cannot be comfortable if they don’t have a way to relax while either playing with toys or clay at their table or reading a book near their bookshelf. Kids playrooms should include both chairs at the table and a chair somewhere else in the room such as a beanbag chair or a small upholstered armchair. Chairs away from the table allow children to experiment with their creativity away from a set location. They can also moves these chairs around their playroom to locations where they feel more at ease, such as next to a window.

Shelves are incredibly important for storing toys, books, and other supplies in kid’s playrooms. The shelves you place in your playroom should be low enough for you child to reach while still being at a level that’s appropriate for your child as they get older. Shelves that can be screwed into the walls are ideal for adjusting with your child’s height as they grow up.

Toy boxes or chests let your child feel as though they can be organized while still being a little messy. After all, the inside of a toy box is never kept well managed. Many kids’ playrooms keep a toy box somewhere that allows it to double as a piece of furniture. With a small blanket and pillow, they can even double as another place to sit.

No matter how old your child is, a painting easel is a great way for a child to explore their creativity. There are child safe paints for older children, and younger children can use markers or crayons on their easel. Large easels are good because it gives your child more space to explore on the paper, although small ones let your child practice coloring or painting in confined spaces.

Sand tables can be risky to have indoors because of the mess a child can make as well as the risk of younger children putting things in their mouth. However, there are smaller sand tables with lids that can prevent children from playing with them without adult supervision. Indoor sand tables are excellent during bad weather and also keep outdoor dangers like bugs and dirt from mixing in with the sand your child is playing with.

Every child needs something to either play or draw on, and that’s where play tables come in. Play tables are simply smaller tables usually made of a material that’s easy to wash off such as plastic. It’s best to choose a table with a smooth surface so coloring on the table is easy to do. Many places sell tables as a set with smaller chairs that are the perfect size for your child.
