The first day of school is day that is notorious for kids comparing and showing off their new clothes, even at the youngest ages. Needless to say, kid’s shoes are an important part of any child’s outfit. You should spend the same kind of time picking out good shoes as you would any other piece of clothing. You’ll have your work cut out for you – there are many different varieties of kid’s shoes out there.
For younger children, one of the most important elements of a shoe is how it’s fastened. If your child hasn’t learned how to tie his or her shoes yet, you may want to opt for a Velcro or slip-on style shoes. Be sure to be patient with your child when it comes to learning to tie their shoes. Don’t just buy tied shoes and force your child to wear them – that’s not a healthy learning environment. You may want to buy both a Velcro pair and a tied pair, so that the child can wear Velcro to school and practice with the tied shoes at home.
It’s also important to keep the seasons, as well as the child’s activities, in mind when buying shoes. It’s probably a good idea for the child to have boots for the winter months to protect their feet from the cold, and some flip-flops or sandals to keep their feet cool in the summer months. That said, having access to some good athletic sneakers is generally necessary for when the child attends gym class.
There are few popular trends that have appeared (or resurfaced) in recent years that parents should be aware of. One trend that was popular several years ago and has recently started to return is that of light-up shoes. These shoes have LED lights that flash in unique patterns each time the child steps. They may seem a little ostentatious, but many children enjoy having a little extra flair with each step that they take.
Another recent trend is for shoes that are essentially hybrids between sneakers and in-line skates. Known commonly as skate shoes, these shoes add a sense of fun to any child’s ensemble. A child can use these shoes to glide down the halls of their school, but they are also easy to walk on as you might normally. Despite the added features, these shoes generally aren’t much more expensive most other types of shoes.
Just like with adult shoes, there is a wide range of styles available for kid’s shoes. From sneakers to dress shoes to loafers, just about any style you can imagine is available. You should be sure to talk to your kids about what kinds of styles they’d like to wear. While you should be aware of current trends, it’s also important to let your child express their individuality to some degree.
