We all spend about 1/3 of our lives in a bed, so of course comfort is a key consideration when choosing kids bedding. While there are a variety of materials, styles, colors and prices available, one area you don’t want to scrimp on is the comfort. Once you find the type of bedding you feel is most comfortable then you can find something within your budget that’s the style and color you and your child want.
Younger children love sheets and bedding sets with their favorite characters on them, and considering the relatively small expense of a set of sheets, it’s an affordable and fun touch. But you can save even more by purchasing more neutral sheets (though they don’t have to be in neutral colors!) and adding small touches around the room featuring the favorite character. Posters are probably the cheapest and most disposable and replaceable option.
Still, your child’s input on choice of bedding can certainly make your child feel you respect his or her opinion. And even if the room is themed, simply choosing bedding that reflects the colors or patterns throughout the room can make the bedding coordinate nicely. Even in bedding without popular characters there are some fairly limiting choices, but you and your child may opt for them because they’re perfect for the room or the child simply loves the look of them. Very flowery, lacy designs might be quickly outgrown, depending on how far away the girl is from pre-teenhood or the teen years.
Boys might enjoy a baseball themed room and kids bedding decorated with a favorite sports’ teams or athlete’s logo, but once the teen years hit they might feel those sheets are too childish and crave something that seems a little more mature.
The key to choosing kids bedding that doesn’t break the bank and still makes your child happy is to compromise. While the purchase of themed sheets is relatively inexpensive, you may not want to have to replace them every several months. It’s a good idea to purchase more than one set of sheets for a child’s bed—even if you purchase one set that’s themed, make the other sheets a more neutral set, in colors that coordinate with the room. This keeps you from having to wash as often, and you’ll have a spare set when one set is dirty.
To purchase kids bedding that goes with the child’s room without risking the need to replace it because a child has outgrown an interest, choose colors that coordinate and opt for an inexpensive fleece blanket or throw featuring a favorite character, or a pillowcase, rather than entire sheet sets or a comforter the child will quickly outgrow.
