Learning To Drive

By Kidglue Team on October 8th, 2008

Who can forget drivers ed? Most of us remember those weeks of “boring” classroom instruction about the rules of the road, and then that first road lesson behind the wheel. The experience is made even more memorable by that passenger-side brake that the instructor wasn’t shy about using to make a point (or keep us all safe)! Today there are tons of great options for drivers education.  Find the program that’s perfect for your teen, and they’ll be road-ready in no time! You’ll be able to rest easy knowing they’re safe and experienced on the road.

Now, computer-simulated drivers ed instruction gives the younger generations an even better education before they hit the road. Drivers ed games help prepare students to control a car before that first day behind the wheel of a real vehicle. There are online games available for free, and games that you can purchase and install on your computer. Many simulate the driving experience (not like most popular driving video games, though, where sometimes crashing or driving illegally is the point of the game!) and some teach the rules and common sense driving know-how.

The drivers ed video games attempt to simulate real driving as closely as possible. While some require use of the mouse and keyboard, other games allow the player to use a steering wheel specially made for driving games. If nothing else, they at least get a student used to being in control and concentrating on driving.

Quiz-style drivers ed games test rules of the road knowledge. While students still may find this part of drivers ed boring, using a computer for quizzes and learning typically makes the task more enjoyable for kids because it feels more like a game.

The more fun the games are, the more time kids will spend playing them. The drivers ed video games especially are usually bright and colorful, funny and witty, in a style to keep teenagers interested, to keep them coming back. By the time the student is being tested on the rules of the road in a drivers ed class at school, all the time spend on the computer learning the rules and being quizzed on them will certainly help. And the drivers ed video games help along with those because they’re putting those rules and that knowledge into practice immediately, even if only virtually. There’s usually a gap between the ‘book’ learning part of drivers ed and the driving portion in school. With the use of drivers ed games, kids can practice both at the same time which can help certain rules and procedures make more sense.

While there’s really no way to learn to drive besides actually driving, drivers ed games and quizzes on the computer can certainly prepare a student for learning to drive. Kids love to spend time on computers and online, so any time spent playing drivers ed games is one more step toward making that student a good driver.
