Outdoor Toys

By Kidglue Team on October 8th, 2008

Playing outdoors is a great activity that parents should encourage with their kids. With some kids, you can simply open the door and they’ll find way to entertain themselves for hours. Others, however, need a little direction – and that’s where outdoor toys can come in handy. There are a huge variety of outdoor toys on the market today, so it shouldn’t be a challenge to find something that any child can enjoy.

For parents who are willing to make a big investment (and who have a lot of space to work with), there are a number of larger outdoor “toys” that your children are sure to love. One great example of this is a sandbox. Sandboxes are great ways to encourage a child to use their imagination. In a sandbox, a child can express their junior artist and architectural skills. Sandboxes are actually relatively inexpensive to build or to have built, so they’re a good option for a family on a budget.

There are plenty of extra outdoor toys you can add to a sandbox to help your child express their creativity. Young boys tend to be fond of toy trucks, which allow them to turn their sandbox into a miniature construction site. Aside from that, toy shovels and buckets are great for any sandbox, letting children experiment with using tools to aid them in completing tasks.

Another big outdoor toy involve swing sets and climbers. These things will vary in size, some can cover an area of 40 square feet, although there are many smaller models, too. These setups include such things as swings, slides, small playhouses, and climbing bars. They make a great way for children to enjoy a sunny outdoor day. Playhouses also offer kids a unique place to play “house” or “fort” depending on their preference, and give them a sense of space that is their own.

Some other good outdoor toys to add to any child’s collection include things like balls, kites, Frisbees, and remote control vehicles. Having things like balls and Frisbees around is often quite useful, especially if you have multiple children in the same age range, or your child often has his or her friends over. It allows the children to play games together, and they can even experiment making their own rules.

Kites are something of a dying art, but still a fun outdoor toy to play with. There’s still something special about teaching your child to fly a kite. Even if you never had the experience when you were a kid, getting kites for you to learn to fly alongside your kids is a great way to bond.

These are just a few of the options for outdoor toys. Perhaps the best outdoor “toy” for any child is his or her imagination – you should always encourage your children to flex their imaginative muscles.
