If you ask any kid what he or she needs to go back to school, the list you’ll get in answer might scare you away from back to school shopping altogether. It’s bound to be long, and full of things that the child wants, has seen on TV, has been told is necessary, maybe by other kids, and every new gadget under the sun. The good news is that they don’t really need all that to go back to school. But there are some things that usually have to be purchased during back to school shopping.
New clothes are pretty much a necessity. Even if a child has decent clothes to start in, one or two new items that the child really likes can certainly make the idea of going back to school appealing. Often, shoes the child finished the previous school year are almost outgrown by September. Comfortable shoes that can stand up to wear and tear and a good, practical choice.
When back to school shopping for a backpack or school bag, make sure it’s comfortable. It’s going to be filled and will likely be heavy, so consider how easy it is to carry. A heavy pack is best worn on the back rather than carried, so if you anticipate lots of heavy books every day, opt for a backpack instead of a bag. Durability is important, too, if you want the backpack to last the whole school year.
Of course, you’ll need the basics: binders, notebooks, pens, pencils, paper, folders, a calculator, colored pencils, a compass, and other basic supplies depending on the age of the child and the requirements of his or her grade.
If your child doesn’t have a desk, and the child is getting older, consider getting a student desk so your child will have a designated place to do homework at night. While there’s nothing wrong with doing homework at the kitchen table or on the bed, a child’s own desk is a place that signifies that it’s time to work, and keeps homework from lasting all evening while they do other things. It also gives them a special work-space that they can decorate or organize how they want.
If you don’t have a computer at home, consider investing in one now. There’s a lot of software that teaches while the kids’ have fun. If you’re budget conscious, the computer system doesn’t have to cost thousands of dollars with top-of-the-line graphics for gaming. A computer that allows the child to use educational software, word processing, and if you choose, Internet access to allow the child to get online for things like research, is an excellent investment in your child’s education. Often, systems are on sale for back to school shopping and you can get a great deal on computer that’s perfect for your child’s needs.
