Diaper Bags

By Kidglue Team on October 8th, 2008

Taking your baby out in public requires an awful lot of planning and forethought. When you go out by yourself, it’s likely that you’ll simply grab your purse or wallet and car keys and be ready to hit the road. With babies, you instead need to consider every aspect of their life and provide for multiple situations long before you leave the house. When stocking your diaper bags, there are important essentials to remember that can make your long and short trips much easier to undertake.

One of the first essentials you will need to remember to pack in your diaper bags are objects related to feeding. If you breastfeed, you will need to supply yourself with a cover so that you can feed your child comfortably in public. If you bottle feed, you will need enough formula to cover 150% of the time that you will be gone from your house. Remember that after formula is mixed in a bottle, it should all be drunk in one sitting and any remaining will need to be tossed instead of saved. Therefore, you will need to pack 50% more formula than you would potentially need for the length of time that you will be gone.

Another essential to consider when stocking your diaper bags is diapers. Like formula, you should pack 50% more diapers and diaper covers than you would actually need for the period of time that you will be gone from your house. You never know when especially messy accidents will occur, or if your baby may need a few extra diapers while you are gone. In addition, you will need to pack lots of wipes when you leave the house, not only for diaper changes but for cleaning up any other spills or accidents that may occur.

Babies can become extremely messy and dirty extremely quickly. When you are at home, this may not be a big deal and can be dealt with easily. But while you are out, it can turn into a disaster. It is important to pack multiple changes of clothes for your baby, even if you only anticipate being gone from your home for a short length of time. All it takes is one extremely messy diaper to ruin an entire outfit. Rather than leaving your child in soiled clothing, ensure that you have changes of clothes so that you can restore them to cleanliness.

Toys are also important to include in diaper bags. Even if you bring along just one rattle or one stuffed animal, it can help to keep a baby engaged the entire time you are gone. If you want to avoid the hassle of repacking a diaper bag each time you leave the house, you can leave a bag pre-packed at all times with these essentials so that whenever you are ready to get out of the house, your baby is as well. Stocking your diaper bags need not be a hard task but must always be given due consideration.
