Halloween Games For Your Kids

By Michael Arcand on October 24th, 2008

Traditionally Halloween is a time when children dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating. Yards are decorated in various displays from the macabre to the fun, with jack-o-lanterns usually a centerpiece on the porch or in a window of the home.

So what happens after the evening’s candy hunt is over and the little ones are back at home base examining their loot? If you’ve got the time, why not set aside some time for fun and games with the kids? Halloween games are sure to be a big hit and can provide great entertainment as a follow-up to the neighborhood treating adventures.

Below are a few of my picks as the best Halloween games for your kids, with a few links and web resources to find other games listed afterward.

One popular game that kids like to play at Halloween is known as the mummy wrap. For this game you divide the kids up into small groups and one person in each group is selected to be the mummy. The other kids participate in wrapping up the mummy with toilet paper. The groups can compete with a mummy race, best wrapped mummy, fastest wrapped mummy, etc. The kids in each group can take turns being the mummy, or can draw straws to see who will be the mummy, depending on how much toilet paper you have on hand. The kids would also enjoy a parent mummy wrap too! For safety reasons, always be sure that the wrapping instructions prohibit covering the eyes or face.

Below are five websites with excellent Halloween game ideas. Some of these are traditional games such as bobbing for apples, while others are quite inventive such as the Halloween Feel Box. Here are the sites (in no particular ranking order) with a brief description of the types of games you will find there:

FamilyFun.com
FamilyFun.com is a Disney site, so you know it is family friendly and kid safe. In addition, the Halloween games listed here range from spooky to fun and even a few that involve some walking or running to burn off the extra candy calories from the day’s harvest.

Kaboose.com
This is another great site for parents, with an excellent selection of Halloween games. Not only do they have traditional games and games for the home, they also have online games for the kids. So if you’ve only got one or two children and they are still looking for something fun to do, perhaps an online game would be right up their alley!

About.com: Family Crafts
While I’m not usually a big fan of About.com, this particular Family Crafts section with Halloween Games is an excellent resource from their guide on the subject. From word scrambles to memory games to costume races, this list has more than a few games that I didn’t see on the other websites I’ve listed here. Definitely worth checking out.

Halloween Online Magazine
This is another great resource with mainly traditional games for Halloween. There are a few unique twists here and it is worth a visit when planning your Halloween activities this year.

The fact is, Halloween can be a fun and exciting holiday for all the members of the family. Games such as the ones listed above are great for kids and adults alike and will help provide hours of entertainment either before or after the hunt for candy.

Whatever you do, be safe, have fun and have a Happy Halloween!
