Planning a pregnancy is an exciting time for the soon-to-be expecting couple. There are many things to think about and have ready prior to conception.
The Mayo Clinic states that the preconception planning should begin a year in advance, ensuring the body is fully ready for the difficult task of pregnancy. The reason for this year wait is due to a number of factors, including:
- What type of birth control method is/was being used prior to the thoughts of conception? Although birth control pills or depo-provera shots allow you to become pregnant shortly after missing a scheduled pill/shot, it may be difficult to diagnose the expected due date. Being off of the pills/shot for a few months is suggested to easily determine when ovulation occurred.
- Are vaccinations all current? If there are any vaccinations that are needed, you may be requested to hold off on getting pregnant for a minimum of 30 days.
- Are there any chronic medical conditions? If you are diabetic, have high-blood pressure or other conditions you will want to ensure that everything is under control prior to becoming pregnant for both your and your baby’s well being.
- What types of medications or supplements are you taking? Prior to becoming pregnant, discuss all medications and supplements that you are taking with your doctor. They may want to make changes to the dose or type of medication that is being used. They may also begin you taking prenatal vitamins and/or folic acid to assist with the baby’s neurological growth during the first month.
- Are there risks of sexually transmitted diseases? You will want to ensure that you are free of any STDs prior to becoming pregnant. Some diseases can be transmitted to the baby or cause infertility.
- How will the baby fit into your lifestyle? It is important to discuss your lifestyle with your partner, ensuring you have plans on how the new baby will fit in. Will both of you work after the baby is born? Where will the baby be placed while you are at work? Do you have room in your home for another baby? Can you financially afford to care for a new baby?
Although it seems like a lot to think about and a lot of planning, it is important to ensure you and your partner are fully ready for the responsiblity of a child. Having a child is a life-changing event and may completely change your lifestyle.
