Having three children of my own, I know that I learned more and more about what to do and what not to do with a baby. It seems that everyone has advice and everyone will tell you how to do just about everything with your new baby, whether you want the advice or not. I always take advice that is given and give the old ’smile and nod’ agreement to make the person believe I agree with them, even if I know better.
One area that people love to give their own opinions on is how to feed your baby. With my first I was told that it was fine to give him a bottle while he was laying down. I quickly found out that doing that caused him to get multiple ear infections. I worked in a day care center for quite some time and watched many babies that were given milk without properly burping them. I very quickly found out that doing this will cause them to throw up all over the place.
So what is the proper way to feed your baby? Well, Janeen Hayward has created a video on Howcast that explains the proper way to feed your baby and keep them safe and as gas-free as possible.
To ensure you are fully equipped to feed your baby, ensure you have the following:
- A bottle full of formula or breast milk
- A bib and/or burp rag (personally I liked the cheap cloth diapers, they are super absorbent and last forever, I used the same ones through three kids!)
- A comfortable place to sit
If you follow the steps that Janeen gives in her video, feeding time should be a wonderful bonding experience for the two of you.
