How to Make Christmas Ornaments

By Amber Ortega on December 3rd, 2008

There is something about the holiday season that brings out a person’s creative side.  Even if you aren’t crafty throughout the year, for some reason, Christmas will make you want to make decorations, presents and ornaments.  There are many easy ornaments you can make at home to decorate your tree.
As far back as I can remember I have seen variations of this fun craft.  The mouse made of Hershey’s Kiss candy has been done in various ways.  To make the Mice Ornaments shown here, felt ears and a fishing line hanger are sandwiched between two Hershey’s Kisses.  To make the tail a piece of curling ribbon is tucked into the foil.  Simply finish off by adding some googly eyes and you have an adorable mouse!

I love the look of these Polished Ornaments.  They can be done in any color you would like.  Simply take plain ornaments and paint them with nail polish.  Imagine the possibilities!  Use clear ornaments and paint with metallic-colored paint or use a glitter polish.  My daughter would go CRAZY with this project!  Check out the nail polish section at the store, you can even find polish that has small stars and hearts in it.

Do you scrapbook?  I would love to say I do, but I never get around to actually doing it.  I have all intentions to do it, but just never can get everything out.  So what do I do with all those pictures?  A Photo Ornament is a great idea!  Take your favorite photos and create a frame out of felt, rik rak, ribbons, beads, sequins or anything else you have in your craft stash.

The holiday season is full of love, why not incorporate love into your decorations.  Candy Cane Heart Ornaments are an adorable way to bring together love and one of the most common holiday items.  Simply take two candy canes and using a hot glue gun connect them in the shape of a heart.  You can add a decorative button, bow or most anything to cover the glued area.  Personally I have used the individually wrapped mini candy canes to make a garland for the mantel.  After making the hearts, I tied them together to make the garland.

As you can see there are a variety of ways to make ornaments for your tree and/or home.  Be creative and use things you have around the house.  You will be surprised at how many unique decorations you can come up with.
