Keep Little Arms Warm…With Socks

By Amber Ortega on January 19th, 2009

Little arms get cold quickly it can be difficult to keep jackets and gloves on those little arms and hands.  A great solution that has a growing popularity is arm warmers.  Now you ask what arm warmers are?  They are like long gloves, but without the fingers.

Arm and leg warmers are easy to make and so convenient to wear all of the time.  Your fingers are free so you can still write, type, play, whatever!  I have made a few different pairs for my daughter to keep her little skinny arms from being so cold, even when she insists on wearing a t-shirt to school in the cold weather!

Here is what you need to make your arm warmers:

  • 1 pair of knee-high socks (looking through the kids section you can find some cute character socks!)
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Needle

Now are you ready for this, you will be amazed at how easy these are to make!

  1. Cut the socks just above the heel.  You will want to make a straight cut.  You will want to check how long the socks are for whomever you are making the arm warmers for.  My daughter’s arms were a little too short for arm warmers this long, so I ended up cutting them a little shorter.
  2. Now turn your sock inside out and fold the cut edge down by about a half inch or so.
  3. Get your needle and thread and loosely sew the edges.  I have tried to do this with a sewing machine and found that just stretched out the socks too much, making them look funny on the ends and ultimately ugly.
  4. Now I always try the warmer on at this point to find where the thumb will be.  Cut a small slit in the side of the sock for a thumb hole.  I cut about an inch slit in these socks to fit my 5-year-old.
  5. Fold the edges of your thumb hole in slightly and stitch around to seal edges.
  6. Your gloves are now done.  This picture shows the gloves a little big for my daughter, the socks were adult-sized.  Children’s socks work better for smaller children’s arm warmers.  Some kids, like my daughter, prefer the arm warmers are not tight on their arms.

Wasn’t that easier than you thought?  This same idea can be used to turn socks into leg warmers!  Baby leg warmers are great for crawlers to protect their little knees.  Give it a try, your kids will love them!
