How to Be a Happier, Healthier Mom

stree-parentingAs moms we deal with a lot of stress and pressure.  You have to make sure the bills get out, the house is clean, dinner is on the table, your toddler potty trains, the kids sleep through the night, etc.  Some of these tasks require a tremendous amount of delicacy and patience, often with no thanks or recognition.  It is easy to see how many moms can feel weighed down by everyday life.  With all of these responsibilities, it is essential that you make a little time for yourself.

One of the best things that you can do for your body and mind is to exercise regularly.  Aside from the physical benefits of a healthy heart and a trim waistline, it can also have a positive effect on your mood.  Studies have shown that the endorphins released during moderate exercise appear to affect brain chemistry and brain cells in the same way as antidepressant medication.  In fact, in a four-month study that tested regular exercise against the common antidepressant, Zoloft, the effect on the brain was found to be equal.  And eight months after the respective programs were tapered off, the exercise group was doing better than the Zoloft group.  Scientific data aside, I can say from my own personal experience that daily exercise gives you a sense of accomplishment.  Unlike doing the laundry or cleaning the house, exercise is a tangible achievement.  On those days that I can’t seem to keep the kids happy or the house clean, I find solace in knowing that at least I met one goal that day.

Getting your daily dose doesn’t require a lot of time or equipment.  It can be as simple as breaking out the stroller and taking a walk around the neighborhood.  Or turning on some lively music and dancing around with your kids.  Just be sure to get in 30 minutes of activity most days of the week.  Soon you will find that you have a new spring in your step and maybe even a better outlook on life.
