For a quick, easy and fun project with your kids, try to make some tie-dyed hearts.  I have made these for different times of the year, including tie-dye snowflakes and butterflies.  Using a few items from around your house you can make a really cute heart and your kids will love the “magic” of the colors mixing.  When I had a preschool class, they loved making different tie-dyed things because they were so much fun to watch magically transform.

First you will need to gather your large amount of supplies, ok not really, all you need is:

  • Regular coffee filters (if you don’t drink coffee, like my household, you can get a huge pack for about $1.00)
  • Markers
  • Spray Bottle filled with water or if you don’t have one available  you can also use an eye dropper
  • Scissors

You probably have all of those items already throughout your house, now let me walk you through the fun project!

1. Flatten your coffee filter and use your markers to color all over.  This is great for all ages of kids.  I had 2-3 year olds in my class, but often helped in other classes, having even the one year olds making these. The filter in this picture was colored by my two-year-old, although I know my five and eight year olds would love to help as well.

2. Place your filter on a piece of paper or something that will not matter if a little marker gets on it.  Spray with water or place drops of water with the eye dropper.  The more water you spray the more the colors will merge together and create the tie-dye effect.  This is the part that kids love the most, and spraying water is a great task for them, they can’t hurt anything if they miss!

3. Allow the filter to dry flat.  Once fully dried, fold in half and cut a heart shape.  If you aren’t able to free-hand draw it, you can create a shape like I did in this picture, or you can use a stencil.

4. You have an adorable tie-dyed heart that can be used as a Valentine, a decoration or just a work of art by your little one.  The kids will be proud of their work, and people that don’t know how easy this is will be very impressed with how they turn out.
