After you have kids, romance tends to take a backseat in your marriage. Its not a conscious action. But between diaper changes and nursing sessions, who really has the time or energy? Luckily there are a few occasions each year that bring a chance to revive a little of that passion. And none of them are more widely anticipated than Valentines Day. Here are a few ways to make this a V-Day to be remembered.
The best investment you can make on this holiday is to hire a babysitter. This is pretty elementary, but for good reason. It works! Whether it is just for dinner or an overnight getaway, this is a gesture that will not go unappreciated by your significant other. Almost all of my time and energy goes into my kids on a day to day basis. And although my husband understands that this is necessary at their age, I know that sometimes he yearns for a little undivided attention. It always means a lot to him when I plan a night out. Not only because we get a some alone time, but also because he realizes how hard it is to make preparations to get away.
Whether it is because of an extra clingy little one or the lack of a suitable sitter, sometimes you just can’t get out of the house. If you fall in to this category, don’t fret, you can still have a special night with your loved one. The key is to get the kids to bed early. I wear mine out with lots of fun Valentines crafts and parties during the day. Then I make them their own customized dinner, usually involving a lot of red food coloring, about an hour earlier than usual. This way they still have a special day and don’t feel cheated by an early bed time.
I like to cook, so I usually prepare something special for dinner. But if you’re not into cooking, you might want to order carry-out from your favorite restaurant earlier in the day. Then you can just heat it up or otherwise prepare it later in the evening. An easy, romantic dessert is chocolate covered strawberries. Just melt chocolate chips in a double boiler, dip clean strawberries into the chocolate and place them on a wax-paper lined platter. Chill in the fridge for an hour or longer and Voila! To create some ambiance, light some candles, play some soft music and pour some good wine.
