hanf-me-downs-sm As a younger sibling, I grew up in hand-me-downs. Not that I minded, mind you – my sister is five years older than me and I loved her taste. Now that I have children of my own, I have continued the hand-me-down tradition. Fortunately for my children (and my wallet), I have expanded it to include not just the older siblings in my own family, but my church and community as well. I rarely have to buy clothing for my three kids, but when I do, I go to the ultimate hand-me-down heaven: the Internet.

A couple of weeks ago, I was introduced to one of my new favorite sites, www.hand-me-downs.com. It’s like having the biggest family in America! There are 20 major metropolitan areas you can shop from, and the site guesses where you live based on your IP address and automatically displays the deals in your area (you can change it if they guessed wrong or you want to shop another area).  The site is clean and simple, making it easy for mommy-brains to navigate and quickly find what we need when we need it. Categories are listed and broken down on the left, with handy item counts listed so you know right away if there are any changing tables in your area to buy. No clicking through a dozen menus or categories here – just look and know. Huzzah!

There are two majorly cool features to www.hand-me-downs.com. The first is a thrill for frugal moms like me: the last section in every category is FREE! At Hand Me Downs you can buy, sell, donate, or give away your baby items. I believe a key component to parenting is teaching our children to be mindful of those in need. The hard part is that sometimes it’s hard to find a place to actually help those in need. Now it’s easy!

The second cool feature is for the starstruck among us. You can bid on celebrity hand-me-downs! In February, I drooled over Kingston’s cool baby gear that mom Gwen Stefani no longer needed. Soon, I’ll be able to see what Nicole Richie used for her baby. And lest you get agitated at celebrity moms making even more money, I’ll let you in on a secret: the auction proceeds go to charity. Nicole’s proceeds will benefit the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.

So what if what you need isn’t available in your area? No problem. Amazon shopping links are right there, making www.hand-me-downs.com the only baby-shopping stop you’ll need.

It’s ok – go shop for hand me downs now. You can thank me later.
