Our 1 year old and 3 year old have both had chronic ear infections and we've tried garlic oil as well with mixed success. After a doctor visit, and hearing tests with an audiologist , ear tube surgery was even recommended. We found that using air injected into the nose while swallowing allows air into the eustation (spelling?) tube and clears fluid very well. We've bought an Ear Popper device (bad name, but great product) which apparently works 75% of the time to reduce fluid/infection to avoid surgery. We've read a lot about issues with ear tube surgery as well... see article below.

One thing to consider is if your child has a fluid buildup in his ear. My son had three ear infections in a row before he turned a year old. They tested him each time to see if the fluid was draining, but it wasn't. His doctor didn't seem to think it was a big deal, but I took him to a specialist anyway. I didn't like having to give him three rounds of antibiotics in a row before he was a year old. His doctor thought I was waisting my time. The ENT specialist said it was a very good thing that I brought him because he needed tubes put in his ears. The specialist told me of cases where parents went to him too late and part of their child's ear eroded away! Since my son was just learning how to speak, I was concerned about how he was hearing. The specialist said with the fluid buildup, he was hearing like he was underwater. So, I just wanted to share my experience to let you know there may be times when you need to get it checked out. My son is five now and has not had an ear infection since he got his tubes in, a week before he turned a year old. The tubes only stay in six months to about 1 1/2 years. I hope this information helps.

I didn't know such medication for the ear existed before. It really is great when you search for more using the internet. - Ana
