Most holidays are self-explanatory. New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day. Even President’s Day leaves no question as to why we have it. But what in the world is Earth Day? Where did that come from? And how am I supposed to get my kid to understand it? Well, first things first: go outside.

Let your kids really explore their world. Climb the trees, play in the water, smell the flowers and dig in the dirt. While they play, connect the earth with the things it makes. Most kids don’t truly realize that the paper they draw on comes from the trees they’re climbing on. The water they splash in is used by virtually every manufacturing process in the world. Flowers are used for perfumes and essential oils. The list is endless.

Once you’re done playing outside, head inside for a little school of hard rocks. Explore the history of Earth Day with your kids. Make some cool Earth day crafts and let your kids live Earth Day. It’s the best way to learn anything.
