KidGlue Review: Moon Sand

Every time the commercial comes on, I hear all three kids chime in that they want Moon Sand. All I think is this is another messy thing that won’t last. Moon Sand is supposed to stay moist and allow kids to play with it over and over. It comes with a variety of molds and tools that remind me of my old Play-Doh days. Watching the commercial, I guess you can even make something, bake it and then it will harden. Pretty cool right? My kids each got a tub of the stuff in their Easter basket, that darn Easter bunny!
All three kids, ages eight, five and two, sat down to play at the same time. They all loved it, making cute little chicks and bunnies, creating mini forts. My eight-year-old lost interest after about ten minutes of play time. The youngest two lasted about five to ten minutes longer. They were happy playing with it and kept calling me over to look at what they had created. It feels soft and squishy, much like moist sand at the beach. Of course you can’t find beautiful green or purple sand at the beach, and there won’t be a wave to wash away your hard work! It was an overall success with the kids, however I wasn’t quite as happy with it. I set up each kid with a work area of newspaper under their sand. This helped a lot when it came to pouring the sand back into the containers. The floor of my kitchen was covered in sand though. It stuck to their hands and clothes and my entire house got sprinkled with colored sand as they walked to get cleaned up. My kids give it two thumbs up, I give it thumbs down. Personally, I would rather have the kids paint than play with this messy stuff. Even Play-Doh is easier to clean up!
What others are saying about Moon Sand:
“Moon Sand is recommended for ages three and up, and while my nine year old son has little interest in it, my more creative eight year old daughter loves it. Any child who enjoys sandboxes, or molding clay-type materials, is sure to enjoy this product as well. Clean up is easy since it can be vacuumed up off of a carpeted floor, and will not stick and dry to the carpeting like clay or other molding compounds. All arts and crafts type activities bring with them some mess, but at least this one is easy to clean up” by Epinions.
“Moon Sand” is nothing more than damp sand. It doesn’t stick to your kids, or the table, or even to itself. It’s just sand. With food dye. Or somthing. And, it gets All. Over. Your. Kitchen. Even with a rimmed tray- per their advice. Everywhere.” by Moron Mommy Wars.
“We can’t figure out how to make things out of the moon sand without using the molds that came with the set. From what we gather, you have to buy more molds. We tried to make things on our own out of the Moon Sand, but the sand just wouldn’t stay together.” by The Mommy Insider.
