Farah’s Story Puts A Public Face On Battling Cancer

By Akela Talamasca on May 14th, 2009

farrahfTomorrow night NBC will air “Farah’s Story”, a two-hour documentary chronicling Farah Fawcett’s battle with cancer. Filming began in 2006, when Fawcett was first diagnosed, and has continued well throughout the beleagured star’s fight with the deadly disease.

If you think it’s appropriate, I encourage you to watch this with your child. I lost my grandfather to lung cancer in the mid-90’s, and was completely unprepared for the experience. Even to this day, I think a lot of people can’t quite comprehend what a cancer victim goes through, what sort of physical hardships and symptoms occur, and how best to help someone when there doesn’t seem to be anything you can possibly do.

It’s quite likely that many of you know someone who is living with an ongoing debilitating health condition, and it’s my hope that by watching “Farah’s Story”, you can show your child what it means to have compassion, what it is to continue to fight against overwhelming odds, and in the end, that love is the only thing that saves us.

However, I won’t chastise you for watching this alone, if you think it might be a little too intense for a young mind. Only you know your child well enough to know whether this will be appropriate, and there are certainly many ways to teach these valuable lessons. But if you’re a family that watches TV together, this will be a great opportunity for you all to bond.

My mom went through cancer, and you’re right, I was not prepared at all for it. Had no idea how rough it can get.

I’ll be sure to be watching tonight. Thanks for the heads up.

I too watched my Mother battle cancer. I was there as her child, her nurse, her parent and friend.

After My dear Love, Scott, was diagnoised with anal cancer and with Farrah main stream I am now following my calling. I am applying to nursing school this coming Monday.

I pledge to care always! I will be a person that makes an impact on someone’s life.

Let us all watch Farah’s Story with an open heart and mind to follow. Love makes all possible!

I also watched my mother battle ovarian cancer, you never are really prepared to deal with the many procedures, operations, chemo ect… and to watch my mother giving all that she had to fight just to be here another day was just inspireing to me but also was so very painful to see her in pain and strugle the way she did. I to watch this documentary and it just has brought back so many memories, some painful to relive but also the many precious small moments that I had with my mom. The experience taught me never to take any moment for granted and to live life to the fullest. This was a inspireing but painful program for me to watch, I pray for Farrah and wish her only the best.

Bless your heart Farrah. I watched your amazing documentary tonight and being a cancer survivor of two years myself I was so able to relate to you. Unless you have been through the torture of Chemo and Surgeries as we have you can’t possibly understand how incredibly frightening it all is. It’s always like it’s happening to someone else. You are blessed to have such a loving group of family and friends. I will pray for you every day. I have always admired you, had the “Farrah Fawcett” hairdo and loved Charlie’s Angels. NEVER GIVE UP!

    God Bless You!

I just watched and found myself in tears, when her son Redmond entered the room I broke down, I only hope that he will straighten up when he gets out of re-hab and make his mother proud.

I watched Farah’s Story, OMG, I’ve never seen anything so eye opening and heart wrenching. I’ve had cancer within my family as well, but never have seen anybody so strong as Farah Fawcett. Every time they showed her being stuck with that laser needle to her liver I just cried. Farah is a true angel to share her battles with us, thank you for personal story, it was diffently not in vein and to her personal friends and family, you guys are so awesome to be there for her too. God Bless!!

Im so glad Farah could tell her story the way she wanted it told, and not by tabloids. Farah is a mentor to the masses and I agree this is truly her most impotant piece of work ever .
Even though it was painful to watch, I was fascinated by her faith and her spirit. It was uplifting to see.
The love of my life passed away when he was 38, I was 32 and our baby was only 4. We had planned on getting married, but the cancer took him before we were able to.
Seeing Farah having to go through the same diagnosis of squamous cell, same as my fiancee, brought back so many haunting memories.Im glad that she shared her story, sad as it is because, the truth, the horror of having canceer needs to be told.

I know so many people that have died of cancer, not of the flu! Cancer is an epidemic and probably the biggest money maker for the health care industry! Im glad she is questioning it!

I was calmed by her faith, positive attitude and the fact that she shined and directed her energy to doing something so positive.
I felt blessed instead of sad, that she shared the most intimate parts of her life with me, with you , with all of us!
Why isnt there more information and research on squamous cell? It took my fiancees life in a short amount of time, and that was 25 years ago, and to think there isnt any advancement is a tragedy.
Cancer does not discriminate and if affects everyone.

God Bless Farah, shes a trooper and her endearing spirit and love will remain with all her fans for many years to come.
God bless Ryan for having to deal with a real life LOVE STORY.
She has wonderful support, such steadfast and true friends, we should all be so lucky in this life!
I pray Redmond gets his act together too. Sure hope he can get through this and not let this disease set him back.
Her time here is in God’s hands.
HE really did give us an angel to watch!

I watched my daughter Kelly who is 22 walk the in The Relay for life today. I can’t not believe that my child is among all the patients I have cared for at the hospital I work in. She was diagnosed with a rar form of stomache cancer and I can’t believe she is so courageous. I want to thank you Farah for sharing your story with us. I want to send you our love and keep fighting. We will do the same.

To Farah Fawcett, her father, and all her family and friends inclduing particularily Ryan O’Neal and Alana Stewart… I so appreciate having had the opportunity to see this film you were so generous in producing. Along with so many others I found it to be so helpful. Thank you for letting us into your lives. I thought Ryan O’Neal described her in such loving and I am sure accurate terms. Alana, you must be one terrific friend! I am sure you are a rock for those lucky enough to know you. Redmond, I hope you are able to become the person you can be – I imagine there is much in you that is wonderfu I hope you find it, if you haven’t already!
And to the tabloids – how terrific it is that Farah Fawcett got to tell her story on her terms and not have you tell it on yours! One smart, courageous, talented, gifted artist.
I suspect that there will be rainy days when we will be uplifted by the rain and remember her beautiful description of what rain means to her.

I hope all involved find nuturing peace.

Hi Farah, I meet you years ago when I was a young teenager you were the kindest celb I ever encounter you gave me a private meeting and you autograph, I was thrilled!!!!! Now here we are all these years later with cancer I have a kind of leukemia and my mother was just diagnosed with lung cancer. I saw your story the other night you are so brave and inspiring!!!!! One concern is that people with money and privilage don’t get treated like the rest of us medically speaking I was amazed that you got to see the results of you scans (pet & cat) right away!! the majority of us have to wait weeks for some Doctor to get off his ass read them and finally decide to call you and tell you this is AGONY!!!!! MABEY IF YOUR LUCKY THREE WEEKS LATER YOU GET THAT CALL. most working people that have cance and are lucky enough to have insurance have to continue working while they ger treatment, can you imagine having to comtemplate going to WORK that sick. we need more people to help the every day people get the word out for the sake of all especially the little kids with cancer. Please be more of an advocate for the REAL WORLD . WE NEED HELP!!!!!!

    Farah, friends and family
First I would like to tell you I will keep you guys in my prayers, secondly THANK YOU, it takes an extreme amount of bravery to allow people around the world into your life, and even more difficult when your battling cancer. While watching your show I was touched by your spirit in which you live your life even when your dealing with things that most people couldn’t even imagine. I also think that your absoultaly right when you said that you have things left on this earth to do because of you and your families bravery I know see the phrase cancer survivor in a whole new light. I know that going into remission is a wonderful thing for cancer patient but most of the time they are very humble about what they had to go through to get there and you put it all into the light the good the bad and the painful. your struggles with the treatments made me cry and I could’t even imagine having to go through that you are a very strong woman. You are doing a very wonderful service to the world by putting your story out there your raising awarness about not only your cancer but all cancers and the need for further studies on all forms not just some of them. I still believe that because you are such a beautiful person inside and out that you will find your miracle. I wake up each morning thankful for my family and my life I want to try to appreciate every day now. You have a wonderful support group around you and so many fans that love you keep on being the trooper that you are and know that you accomplished your goal with your story way more than I think even you could imagine.

GOD keeps you and your family in his arms and will never give you more than you can handle remeber that. BEST WISHES and GOD BLESS you and your family…….
