Trampolines are a popular way for kids to enjoy the outdoors, get a little exercise and release some pent up energy. In some neighborhoods, trampolines are even seen as a status symbol, and while Mom and Dad may proudly polish their Mercedes or Lexus, Tiffy and Biffy may be inviting half the school over for a bounce.

Unfortunately, trampolines are the cause of nearly 100,000 childhood injuries per year, primarily fractures, sprains and lacerations, but in some cases paralysis and death. Because of this, the American Academy of Pediatrics has advised that trampolines should NEVER be used in a home setting, and only in a highly contained, highly supervised training program.

However, a great number of parents have already purchased a trampoline and undertook the responsibility of hosting such a hazard in their backyard. For those people, some safety tips should be kept in mind:

  • Almost 75% of injuries occur when multiple people are on the trampoline at the same time. Allow only one person on the trampoline at a time.
  • No child under 6 years of age should use a full size trampoline.
  • Keep your bouncing low, under control and to the center of the trampoline.
  • Do not use the trampoline if under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Set the trampoline up away from obstructions, including fences, play structures, sheds, and away from overhanging objects such as branches.
  • Wear clothing that allows free movement but is not so loose as to cause entanglement. Bare feet or trampoline slippers are best; socks can cause slipping. Remove all jewelry and loose articles, such as money and keys.
  • Tip the trampoline onto its side when not in use.

Having experienced the joy and pain experienced at the hands, or springs, as the case may be, of a trampoline, we’ve decided to leave the trampolines for the circus and get our summer “highs” from snow cones and cotton candy. A blue mouth is easier to treat than a blue ankle.

There are sensible precautions to take when trampolining: 1. Use a Trampoline Safety Enclosure 2. Only bounce one person at a time 3. Get a Trampoline with good quality pads 4. Follow the manufacturer’s advice Of course, advice like 'don’t bounce when under the influence of alcohol or drugs' is sensible, but really should be unnecessary. Most things are dangerous when under the influence. Many parents tell us that they are the best things they have ever bought for the children because they are fantastic exercise and the kids love playing, but of course you must use them sensibly. Children need exercise but also need to learn sensible behaviour. Teach them to use the trampoline properly, don't ban them. Will we be banning bikes next?
