Born at 1lb 7oz little Jessica Hawkins beat the odds and survived after being born 4 months in advance. At first, doctors suspected a miscarriage until a scan showed Jessica’s heart beating. Both Parents, Pete and Sam Hawkins were in disbelief that Jessica was able to survive the birth. After four weeks in intensive care, Jessica went home with her parents and is doing just fine.
At 9lbs 11oz jessica is currently six months-young and doing great. She’s beginning to develop normal child tendencies and although still small, she’s passed hearing and vision tests.
Jessica’s story is quite rare, but it did ignite the debates about when abortion is to late to perform. The current law states that women cannot have an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It was intially 24 weeks and might get lowered even further.
The Hawkins couple were more than estactic to see Jessica doing so well. In the past, they had lost 5 other children to miscarriage at similar pregnancy stages. Jessica is currently their only child.
