Get Out and PLAY!

My kids spend a lot of time playing video games and watching movies. They are drawn to technology, but who can blame them? Imagine my eight-year-old’s surprise when a power line by our house was hit and we were without power for about 10 hours. He didn’t know what to do. There was nothing to do, or so he thought. We spent the afternoon getting some chores done then the fun began.
Without electricity we had to use our imaginations, imagine that! We played a few games of Uno, which I had no idea he even knew how to play. It was a lot of fun and had us laughing for a long time. After that it was time to head outside and take advantage of the sun. Who knew we would have so much fun playing football and doing races down the street and back. What was so funny was that almost the entire neighborhood was outside. Everyone was in the same situation and was trying to make the best of it.
We didn’t have power until about 9:30 at night. It was dark and let me tell you, difficult to play Uno by candlelight. You’d be amazed and how close blue and green look in the dim light. The moral of my story is, sometimes the best time you can spend is doing simple things around the house. Throw the ball around, do some races, shoot, break out the water hose and have some fun! Spend time as a family and remember that fun doesn’t have to be expensive.
