With our economy spiraling out of control, many people are becoming desperate and hopeless.  A  lot of us are too young to remember any economic turmoil that have been this severe in the past.  But history shows us that much greater disaster and poverty have been bestowed upon the world and even our country.  Here are some quotes from great people in the past who had the mindset to rise above their circumstances.

Concerned about tough times?

” I am still determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever circumstance I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions and not upon our circumstances.”   -Martha Washington

“It’s time for greatness—not for greed.  It’s a time for idealism–not ideology.  It is a time not just for compassionate words, but compassionate action.”  -Marian Wright Edelman

Recognize The Benefit Of Adversity

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”  -Helen Keller

“You can’t be brave if you’ve only had wonderful things happen to you.”  -Mary Tyler Moore

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”  -Anne Bradstreet

Be Thankful For Your Health

“I have often thought that it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days during their early adult life.  Darkness would make them more appreciative of sight; silence would teach them the joys of sound.”  -Helen Keller

“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”  -Mahatma Gandhi

“Health is the greatest possession.  Contentment is the greatest treasure.”  -Laozi

Give A Little

“You make a living by what you get.  You make a life by what you give.”  -Winston Churchill

Giving pays the highest interest rate and has the longest term of any investment available.“  -Jeffery K. Wilson

“No one has ever become poor by giving.”  -Anne Frank

Keep Your Overall Perspective

Not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted counts.”  -Albert Einstein

No Garden is without its weeds.”  -Thomas Fuller
