Summer break is coming and with it come an annual vacation for a lot of families.  If your travel plans include venturing out of the country be sure to have all of the latest passport and other travel information on hand.  The last place you want to be surprised is at an international airport.  Here is a rundown of the general preparations for traveling abroad this summer.

Get Your Paperwork In Order

  1. Be sure to have a valid, signed passport.  Fill out the information page of your passport.  The US passport policy is stricter than ever.
  2. Make copies of your passport ID page.  Scan the information section and store it in your email box.  This will speed up the replacement process if you lose your passport during vacation.
  3. Leave a copy of your passport and your itinerary with friends and family at home so that they can contact you in case of an emergency.
  4. Review your itinerary before you leave.  Confirm your flights, transfers and accommodations in advance.

Research The Country Where You Are Traveling

  1. Acquaint yourself with local laws and customs.  Remember, when traveling overseas the US Constitution cannot protect you.
  2. Check the local weather so that you can pack accordingly.
  3. Find out if you will need outlet adapters for any electronics you plan on bringing.
  4. Learn common phrases of the local language.
  5. Carry a small amount of foreign currency for expense you may encounter upon arrival.  Typically banks offer a better exchange rate and lower transaction fees than hotels and exchange bureaus.

Do Some Pre-Trip Medical Planning

  1. There are a variety of vaccines that are recommended to prevent diseases that you may be exposed to when traveling abroad.  Try to find a practice that is experienced in travel medicine.  They are knowledgeable not only in vaccinations, but also in other travel concerns such as jet lag and altitude sickness.  They also carry a full line of products including protective kits for water purification, diarrhea and malaria.
  2. Check your international medical insurance coverage.  Ask your provider if it is necessary to obtain supplemental coverage while traveling.

For international travelers, preparation if the 'best medicine'. Travelers are invited to visit www.travelclinicsofamerica.com, a comprehensive educational site for travelers. Travelers need a lot more than just vaccines. A trained travel doctor is essential.
