Did You Receive A Push Present?

By Akela Talamasca on July 15th, 2009

Piles of MoneyI received an email today from my partner, saying that she feels deprived (which was followed by a laugh, so don’t feel too sorry for her). In the body of the email was a link to a definition for something called a “push present”. What’s a push present, you ask? Apparently it’s a gift of thanks to a new mother from the new father, commemorating the months of labor she put in to bring the new child into the world.

It’s a lovely idea, but one I’d never heard of before. According to Wikipedia, the practice has some history in England and India. It’s gaining some traction here in the United States, but needless to say, I hadn’t given one to my partner when she gave birth to our son, so immediately felt over five accumulated years’ worth of guilt for not having done so. Obviously, this goes against the spirit of the idea behind a push present, but rational or not, I still felt bad. I’ll rectify this in my own time, but I now wonder: how attractive is this concept?

I can easily see Hallmark picking this up and running with it — imagine! New children are being born every day; the profit-engendering potential is simply enormous. Have you received a push present? What was it, and how did your partner know to give it?
