The fear is stifling. Palms are sweaty. Mouths are dry. I’m a 100% sure someone has to pee. There’s only a month and a half until the first day of preschool. My 4-year-old is thrilled. I’m terrified.
I knew I was in for it when we went to visit the prospective school right before school let out for summer. I was the one grabbing at ankles and pleading, “Please don’t go!” My time at home with my girls is slipping away, and as I’ve heard many times in my house before: I don’t like to share.
Still, the school year is approaching and we’ve got to get ready. Here’s what we’ve got planned to make the transition smoother than when they switched “Beckys” on Roseanne.
- Working on following directions: I consistently remind my child that in a month and a half, “I don’t want to,” is not going to be an acceptable response to a request to use a tissue rather than trying to scratch her head via her nostril.
- Organizing play dates: The more exposure we can have to interplay, taking turns and not breaking the pink crayon so we don’t have to share it, the better.
- Getting ready on a schedule: My Nike Triax is getting more action timing teeth brushing, getting dressed and ponytail placement than it ever did during my running days.
- Practicing goodbyes: A little separation, whether it be more frequent date nights, or simply independent play in my daughter’s bedroom has provided the opportunity to alleviate separation anxiety.
Preschool will be a time of great change and excitement in our lives. The vaccinations and school supplies are the easy part. Accepting that my little girl is growing up is much, much harder.
