Confucius say: Today is Fortune Cookie Day! It doesn’t matter if you’re Chinese or Japanese – you can still celebrate, because the fortune cookie is actually Californian. There are several competing claims as to the invention of the fortune cookie, but the common element of them all is the sunshine state. Some time between 1890 and 1918, in either San Fransisco or Los Angeles, a cookie was made in a very similar fashion to a Japanese tea cake. A slip of paper was placed inside with some bit of wisdom, quote, or prediction. Then the hype begins.
There are few foods with as many regulations concerning them as the fortune cookie. From the way you choose yours, to the way you eat it, to the realization of the fortune, there are sacred traditions that must be upheld – if you can figure out which one is right.
