I hope you’ve got the day off, because you’re going to need it. Today is Hammock Day! Find a couple of shade trees, tie up a hammock, and relax the day away. People have been using hammocks from at least the late 15th century, when Christopher Columbus discovered the natives using them in the Bahamas. Some believe an Athenian statesman, Alcibiades, to have invented the hammock in the fourth century B.C. It’s been no question that the hammock is a bench of bliss for as long as it’s been around – whether that’s been five centuries or two thousand years. The eternal question of the hammock is this: how do you get into the blasted thing?

When it comes to getting into a hammock, it’s a relatively quick and simple process – if you know what you’re doing. First things first: never get in feet first!

  1. Stand facing away from the hammock. Position yourself as though you were going to sit down and reach behind you, grasping the edges of the hammock.
  2. Spread the hammock taut and slowly sit in the tight area you’ve created.
  3. Continue to hold the edges of the hammock apart as you fully rest on the hammock and recline.
  4. Once fully reclined and comfortable, release the edges of the hammock and enjoy!

For the most comfortable rest, lie at an angle within the hammock, with your head at one corner and your feet at the opposite corner. This creates better weight distribution and keeps the edges from folding in on you. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a nap in a hammock waiting.
