On Demi Lovato’s new album “Here We Go Again” many of the songs explode on the listener. You’ll be listening to a simple pop melody with traditional lyrics about love and longing and then, BAM! The song just erupts with an overflow of energy.
That sound is Demi Lovato officially bursting on the scene.
Even if you aren’t sure who Lovato is, chances are your kids do. The soon to be 17 year old currently stars on the Disney Channel show “Sonny With a Chance” and opened for the Jonas Brothers on tour last summer. She got that gig because she starred in the Disney Channel original movie “Camp Rock” alongside Joe Jonas. That movie gave her enough heat to release her first album, “Don’t Forget” in 2008 which debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts.
In fact, the singer/actress owes much of her success to the Jonas Brothers, much as they owe much of their success to Miley Cyrus. Follow along with us. The Jonas Brothers opened for Miley Cyrus and became huge on their own. The on their first tour, Lovato opened for JoBro and now, this summer, she’s headlining her own tour (opening for Lovato is “American Idol” runner up David Archuletta.) Lovato is even managed by Kevin Jonas, Sr.

She also shares a unique bond with yet another Disney branded tween star. Both Lovato and “Wizards of Waverly Place” star Selena Gomez got their start while acting on “Barney and Friends” in 1999. They remain close to this day, having recently starred in the hugely successful movie “Princess Protection Program,” which – you guessed it – played on Disney.
Though she has so many connections with all of the bubble gum pop crowd, with this new album, Lovato is beginning to step away from them. There’s nothing objectionable here – but the songs simply have a different vibe than the latest Jonas Brothers album or Miley Cyrus single. Each of those artists are beginning to musically mature too, but Lovato has done it much sooner. She’s a noted fan of heavy metal music and the influences are all over the album. Deep bass lines are included on almost every single track and some have some pretty huge guitar riffs. There, of course, are a few simple ballads and top 40 friendly tracks, but even some of those just burst at the seems with rich musical influences – soul, reggae, folk and more. John Mayer even co-wrote on of the songs.
So when your kids beg you to head to Best Buy and pick up “Away We Go Again” or watch “Sonny With a Chance” or DVR the upcoming “Camp Rock 2: Final Jam” (out next summer), give it a shot. Chances are you might just enjoy Demi Lovato too.

Definitely not just for the kids. I'm 26 and I enjoyed her album. I hope she makes it into the mainstream when she's done with Disney.
