So everybody’s got cabin fever and the house feels like it’s becoming a prison. No problem! Answer the call of the open road! Hang up a map, throw a dart, and start packing, because this week Family Fun Month is headin’ for the highway. A road trip doesn’t have to mean a lot of planning or a lot of money, but it can mean a ton of fun if you do it right.

First things first: pack for fun!

Audio Books or Radio Shows – If you’re a bookish or story-loving family, check out dramatized audio books or audio shows to listen to on the road. Adventures in Odyssey is a popular audio show with Christian families, while Harry Potter might be a good choice for other families.

Snacks – Keep the money for the good stuff like souvenirs. Pack some snacks like fruit, crackers, and popcorn, along with an ice chest with water. Popcorn and a group of people in close proximity is almost a guarantee for fun!

Creature Comforts – If it’s going to be a long trip or you have younger kids, take along a pillow, blanket, and stuffed animal. There’s just something inherently cool about camping out in the car. And you have everything you need for an impromptu puppet show!

So, you’re packed and ready. Now what?

Empty and Fill – The fastest way to rain on your roadtrip parade is to have to stop at a gas station or rest area. Growing up, my family’s trip motto was “Empty the bladder and fill the tank!” Wiser words were never spoken. ;)

Play games – There are a ton of travel games you can play that will have the family cracking up in no time. Learn the basic guidelines of several, then change them to fit your family. Being the nerd I am, “Alphabet” was (and still is) my favorite.

Sing – Singing is always fun – that’s why karaoke is so popular. Turn up the tunes and sing along, or sing classic kid songs and see how long it takes before someone starts laughing. See who can come up with the funniest lyric changes or sing with the most animation.

Wave – As a kid I loved waving at people as we passed them. I don’t know what was more fun – the faces we got from people or when they gave in and waved back. Go ahead and try it: slap on the biggest grin you’ve got and wave excitedly to the people in the car next to you. :D

Can’t think of anywhere to go? Just drive to the next big town and use these tips. It just might become one of your family’s favorite summer memories, which is what Family Fun Month is all about.
