Clear out some space in the fridge – you’re gonna need it! Today is Watermelon Day! I can think of no better way to kick off Family Fun Month than to spend some time out in the back yard eating cold watermelon. Whether you choose a red, yellow, seeded, or seedless melon, today’s the day to dig in and let the juice run down your arms and chin!
So how do you pick the best watermelon? Use this checklist, and you should head home with a winning watermelon.
Check the shape – a good watermelon will be symmetrical, whether it’s spherical or oval.
Check the color – darker watermelons tend to have a sweeter taste.
Check the skin – make sure there are no soft spots.
Check the top – there will be little contrast between the stripes on the top of a ripe watermelon.
Check the bottom – there should be a creamy or yellow-white color on the bottom of the melon where it sat on the ground as it ripened. If the patch is light green, it’s not ripe yet.
Check the sound – a thump or knock should produce a hollow sound.
Check the weight – a ripe watermelon will feel heavy for its size, since it’s 90% water.
Remember that a watermelon won’t ripen any more once it’s been picked, so make sure you pick a ripe melon at the store. For the freshest, sweetest melons, head to your local farmer’s market for vine-ripened melons. Plus, there are usually free samples!
