If your child starts messing around in the kitchen before they can form full sentences, let them throw around the flour, sugar and olive oil. Years later, they might be named one of the richest kids in America.

Allyson Ames started baking when she was five years old. At 17, she was named “The Best Young Chef in America” and at 19 she opened Wonderland Bakery in Newport Beach, California. Today, the 23 year old appeared on NBC’s “The Today Show” to discuss her success story. That success story got her mentioned in the new book “The Richest Kids in America” by “Chicken Soup for the Soul” author Mark Victor Hansen.

Ames, with the help of her mother Sondra, helped create a bakery that serves unique food in a whimsical environment. Wonderland Bakery looks like it’s page out of ever girl’s princess fantasy with influences from “Alice In Wonderland,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and the game “Candyland.” Allyson is the head chef, making cookies, cakes, cupcakes and everything in between, while Sondra’s business sense helped get the brand off the ground.

The shop has become a celebrity destination in addition to making Allyson a celebrity herself. Kobe Bryant is a frequent customer and Allyson was named on of the hottest Hollywood celebrities under 25 by Variety. Wonderland was also one of the places chosen to bake cookies for President Obama’s inauguration day events, won the award for “Best Gingerbread Cookie” from “The View” and was honored with the 2008 California Business of the Year Award from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

And all of this money, fame and delicious treats began in the kitchen at the age of five.

So, keep on the lookout for Allyson Ames. Chances are you’ll be seeing, hearing and maybe even tasting, the fruits of her labors very soon. And think about her when your child shows interest or talent in a field. It takes hard work but, ultimately, success is possible.
