NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley once famously told the world that “I’m not a role model.” That sentiment – while wholly sincere – was impossible to live up to because kids worship professional athletes.
That dichotomy is back in the public eye this week with the case of former NFL superstar Michael Vick.
Years ago, Vick was a football god. His ability to run from the quarterback position made him one of the most popular athletes in the world. Then in 2007 news came out that he had been hurting dogs in illegal dog fights. The details were horribly gruesome and Vick pleaded guilty to the charges. He was indefinitely suspended from the NFL and sent to prison.
After serving 18 months of his sentence, Vick was recently released. He was financially broke, remorseful and extremely apologetic. And as of Thursday, Vick is now back in the NFL as he signed a deal to play for the Philadelphia Eagles (after a whole bunch of restrictions, but that’s another story).
Vick’s case is an incredibly detailed and confusing one. And for parents, it might be very difficult to broach the topic with their sons or daughters who see him on every television channel, back page, sports show and even the covers of video games.
Michael Vick’s crimes were atrocious. There’s no denying that. However, this is America, the land of opportunity and he has served his time. He paid his dues and – as is the mantra of this country – deserves a second chance. You can’t punish him again.
Maybe you don’t agree with that sentiment. Maybe you think the crimes he committed against dogs are unforgivable. Certainly, this is a popular point of view. Personally though, I think forgiveness is the way to go.
Everyone deserves a second chance, and this is Michael Vick’s. Let’s home he makes the most of it. Lord knows the people of Philadelphia have their fingers crossed.
