News from Celine Dion is that she and long-time husband René are happily expecting their second child next May. Their first-born, Rene-Charles, was born in 2001, after successful in-vitro fertilization was performed. Another round of treatments made this new gestation possible.
Now, before I go off on a rant here, let me just say this: if you really want a child in your life, you should try to have one. Being a father has changed me in many profound ways, and as difficult as it can be at times, there’s no going back. Celine and René have already been through the experience once before, and if they think they can handle another, more power to them.
However, Celine is now 41 years old, which isn’t an unheard-of age in which to conceive, but it does make a lot of things harder. And René is 67 years old. When their child is going to want to play, will he have the energy to do so? Will they let their cadre of nannies take care of the child themselves? At its most basic, this just feels sort of unfair to the kid. I just turned 40, and my son is 5. He’s a hilarious package of free-flowing energy, and it’s hard to keep up sometimes.
It’s not fair for me to judge the couple for wanting the joy of another child, but I can’t help having my doubts. Instead, I’ll just hope for a stress-free delivery and the health of the family to continue. But it’s not a decision I’d have made.
