Who hasn’t played and loved Candyland? The colorful artwork, the engaging yet simple gameplay … kids have loved it for decades. Six decades, to be precise. Today marks the game’s 60th anniversary, and to celebrate, Hasbro transformed San Francisco’s Lombard Street into a gigantic game of Candyland!
The game was open to University of California, San Francisco Children’s Hospital patients as they negotiated the quarter-mile of hairpin switchbacks, interacting with live characters from the game. Participants are said to have received free copies of the game, and the day will end with cake and a huge party. We don’t have the numbers yet, but from the photos it looks to have been well-attended.
I’m a little bummed that this wasn’t open to adults, as I play Candyland with my 5 year old all the time. And if any nation on Earth boasts a population of childlike adults, it’s San Francisco. We’re witness to regular zombie infestations and pillow fights, for heaven’s sake! This is a good city to grow up in — there’s almost always something interesting, imaginative, and creative going on, not to mention the large number of kid-friendly permanent art installations and tech events.
