Octomom Special – Is She Crazy or Just Misunderstood?

octomom-crazy-or-1

Before watching Wednesday’s special “Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage,” I seriously thought Nadya Suleman was the craziest person on the plant.  Who in their right mind would have six children and then try for more?  She doesn’t have the support of a husband, her mother obviously isn’t supporting her and she doesn’t even have a job!

Have my thoughts of her changed?  Not much.  I still think she is insane for wanting that many children.  I understand that she has a love for children.  I understand the want for a large family, but six children IS a large family.  If you love children that much, why not become a foster parent or get into a career where you work with children?  I love children but know that it would be unfair to have another child of my own.  It would take away from the time and support I could give to each of them.  With three children my days are full, between getting ready for school, practices, running errands and taking them to appointments, I couldn’t imagine having any more.

Throughout the show I continually felt terrible for her children.  You could see the hatred for the cameras in each of their eyes, especially when each of the older children pushed away a camera at least once during the two hour show. It’s as if they were acting out because of the spotlight that has been put on them.  And although Suleman stated several times that she is a “private person” and is trying to be protective of her children, she’s not doing a good job.  I have children in the same age groups so I know some of the bad behavior is due to their ages.  I understood when her 2-year-old hit her, but thought it was curious that he continually called her the “b” word.  On camera she is acting like a perfect “alpha-mom”, but the child has heard that word somewhere, and she can’t blame the father since they don’t see him.

When bringing home the first two babies, her house was surrounded by paparazzi.  It was insane how far some were willing to go in and attempt for a picture.  I thought when she went into her house there would be peace for her and her family to share in the homecoming of the first babies.  The house was filled with cameras.  She stated she did not know it was going to be like that, but seriously, her mother was there.  They knew the cameras would be there and filling her home with noise and chaos.

At what point does some of the responsibility lay in the hands of her doctor?  Before they agree to In Vitro, a assessment of their mental abilities should be assessed.  The doctor should look at her history and say, “You have six children already, it would irresponsible of me to allow you to attempt to have any more.”  If you want to be a foster parent or adopt you must have background checks done.  I believe if someone who is unmarried and unemployed with six children goes in for another In Vitro treatment, they should be evaluated.

So, after watching “Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage,” I believe Nadya Suleman needs help.  She is in over her head and there is no turning back.  If her home were a day care, it would be illegal to have that child-to-adult ratio.  She made a mistake and her children are the ones who are suffering.  Something needs to happen for the sake of those children, they need support that she can not possibly give them, be it financially or emotionally.
