The Baby Name Wizard is a Solution to a Lifelong Decision

By Amber Ortega on August 24th, 2009

The Baby Name Wizard is a Web site dedicated to helping you find the perfect name for your baby.  In one place you can find the meaning, popularity, opinions, famous people with that name, nick names, sibling names, etc.

The home page has a list of the current most popular names in America.  From there you can choose many options to help you choose the perfect name:

  • Name Finder: Allows you use variations to find names based on beginning, end, length, syllables and style.
  • Namipedia: Allows you to search names or input a name to learn their meaning.
  • Name Voyager: Allows you to see the popularity of names in a fun graph.
  • Name Mapper: Allows you to search for names and see their popularity by state, through the years.

This website is based on the book, “The Baby Name Wizard” by Laura Wattenberg.  She states that when attempting to come up with the perfect name for her children, she realized that all the names she wanted to use were taken by her friends and family.  She did research into name trends and created the book to help give parents advice on names, since advice on all the baby gear is readily available.  She was frustrated she could find advice on strollers, car seats and bouncers, but had no assistance with the most important thing for a new baby…the name.

If you are expecting, or just curious as to how popular your child’s name is, go play around on The Baby Name Wizard.  You are also able to give your own opinion on different names, helping other parents to get a different perspective when choosing the perfect name.

Ah, this is super cool. I’m so glad to find it because I’m trying to convince myself that the semi-regular names we’ve picked out for the baby I’m carrying are okay. My son’s name is Dietrich and my name is Kama. They don’t rank in popularity. My husband’s name is Ben. The girl and boy name we’ve picked both rank in the top 200 and 10. Not completely sure how I feel about that!! :)
