Dinosaurs are once again invading toy stores. But isn’t it almost two decades too late?
Hasbro toys announced Tuesday that they would be releasing a brand new line of “Jurassic Park” toys exclusively into Toys “R” Us stores this fall.
“‘Jurassic Park’ is one of the most successful film franchises of all time and has a passionate fan base,” said Derryl DePriest, Vice President of Marketing at Hasbro in a news release. “Dinosaurs are also tremendously popular with kids, and ‘Jurassic Park’ is the mark of authenticity when it comes to realistic and exciting dinosaur play.”
That’s fair enough. Kids do love dinosaurs and the “Jurassic Park” logo is certainly synonymous with those dinosaurs. But do kids who shop in Toys “R” Us in the year 2009 care about a series of movies that came out in 1993, 1997 and 2001?
While one would probably say “No,” the “Jurassic Park” movies are constantly on television. Parents are obviously huge fans and surely show them to their kids. And while some of the technology in the films is waaaaay outdated, the technology that made the films isn’t. For the most part, the dinosaurs look just as real today as they did 15 years ago.
So, no, there isn’t a new “Jurassic Park” movie coming out in the near future but if your kids are dinosaur fans, there’s a whole new line of toys on the way. And really, are kids movies anything more than elaborate toy commercials now, anyway? With “Jurassic Park,” we’re just skipping the movie part and selling the logo.
