GreenLanternFinally, one of the most popular characters in the DC Comic Universe gets his own movie and the result is a fantastic origin story of Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 (just know that it’s where Earth is).  A quality movie with good writing, plenty of action and a good message about how humans should act towards one another, this is a great cartoon to sit down and watch with your kids. Plus, I think you’ll be surprised with how much you liked it.

When test pilot Hal Jordan accepts a mysterious green ring from a dying alien, he accepts membership to the galaxy’s elite police force; The Green Lantern Corps.  The powerful ring is a complex tool that can manipulate green energy into whatever the user imagines and must be used for the good of the galaxy.  The Guardians of the Universe reluctantly let Hal into their ranks and he is to be trained by Sinestro, the most honored of all Green Lanterns.  But Sinestro has his owns plans and soon Hal finds himself in the middle of an intergalactic conspiracy that could have affect the entire galaxy.  A great telling of the Green Lantern origin and a stellar cast of voices including Christopher Meloni, Victor Garber and Michael Madsen make this a movie for everyone in the family.

Why the Kids Will Enjoy It

Aliens, power rings, intergalactic battles, popular characters, what isn’t there to like about this movie for kids?  Fans of the comic series will love that it is true to the source material and newcomers to the Green Lantern will get a well told story introducing them to the universe of the Green Lantern.  They’ll also get a little taste of what they may see in the live action Green Lantern movie set to star Ryan Reynolds and be released in 2011.

Why You Will Enjoy It

A well written and well directed movie, this is will be very enjoyable to adults too.  You’ll enjoy it even more as you see the interesting spin on racism and how we need to act towards each other.  Throughout the rest of the galaxy humans are regarded as uncivilized and barbaric.  The atrocities the humans have committed to each other on Earth is well documented and looked upon with disgust by aliens.  Hal is disliked strictly because he is human in the beginning of the film but he proves himself and becomes well respected and liked throughout the Corps.  This can bring home many messages to get your kids thinking about the world around them.  Perhaps they should think about everyone as a the human race and not a bunch of different races in the same place.  Maybe they should think about how we as a society would look to an alien and about how we would be seen by aliens.

An all around good movie with positive messages about humans, doing the right thing and how to treat others.  Great experience for comic book geeks of all ages, new and old.

“Green Lantern: First Flight” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD only.
