Spider-Man Now Owned by Mickey Mouse as Disney Buys Marvel

By Germain Lussier on August 31st, 2009

marvelHere’s a big news story to impress your kids with on a Monday.

The Walt Disney Company announced today that they’ve purchased Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. What that means – without all the legal ramifications – is that now, Marvel characters can begin to appear at all Disney locations. So instead of just having your picture taken with Mickey and Minnie at Disneyland, there will now also be Spider-Man and Wolverine.

For the time being, the deal does not affect all the big movies that Marvel has coming out such as “Iron Man 2,” “Spider-Man 4″ and “Thor.” Those will get released as scheduled.

The other big plus for Disney in this deal is that they now own characters that boys really go for. Most of Disney’s big money making franchises (Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers, High School Musical etc.) are all aimed at girls. So recently, they’ve tried to get some bucks out of the other 50% of the kid population. They started the channel, Disney XD (read about it here), and now they have all the characters in the Marvel Universe to play with too.

It’s a pretty big deal both in the business, movie, publishing and entertainment world as a whole today and will certainly affect many of the things your kids watch. So if they have questions, now you are armed with the answers.

This could be good and could be very bad. Good = Pixar making Marvel movies, Bad = a Mickey Mouse and Wolverine team up
